What an HVAC crane lift costs

Why lifts happen early or on weekends

Building managers often want lifts on weekends or before 6 a.m. on weekdays, when fewer people are around (RiggingForce). On a busy street the crew may need to close lanes and the sidewalk. In 2023 the rooftop HVAC units on U.S. Bank Plaza in downtown Minneapolis were replaced by helicopter on a Sunday, with streets and sidewalks closed (CBS Minnesota).

If the crane sits on the street, Minneapolis and St. Paul both require an obstruction permit. See Minneapolis and St. Paul.

What the crane company will ask you

Have these answers ready and the quote comes back faster and closer to the final bill.

  1. What it is and what it weighs, plus anything it sits on. A spec sheet or a photo of the nameplate helps.
  2. Its size, and where it is now: on a truck, on the ground or on a roof.
  3. Where it has to go: how high, and how far from where the truck can park. That distance is the reach.
  4. Where the truck can park: street, driveway or lot, and whether the ground is firm and level for the outriggers.
  5. Anything overhead: power lines, trees, roof edges and signs.
  6. The date and time, and whether the lift has to be early or on a weekend.
  7. Who rigs the load and who signals, your crew or theirs.
  8. Street permit: if the truck has to sit in the street, who pulls it.
Diagram of a crane lift: the reach from the crane to the load, the height of the roof, the weight of the load, outriggers on firm ground, and 20 feet of clearance from power lines. Not sure who to call?

Questions

How much does an HVAC crane lift cost?

Usually $1,000 to $5,000. One and two story jobs average $1,200 to $1,800 with a 4-hour minimum (RiggingForce). Early morning and weekend lifts cost more.

How much does a rooftop unit weigh?

Carrier's 48FC units weigh about 482 lb at 3 tons, 878 lb at 10 tons and 2,174 lb at 25 tons. A 25-ton Trane Foundation unit is 1,938 to 2,103 lb.

What size crane do I need for a rooftop unit?

Most single-story jobs take a 15 to 30 ton boom truck. A unit far from the roof edge can need a 40 to 100 ton crane. The crane company sizes it from the weight and the reach.

Do I need a permit to lift an HVAC unit?

If the crane has to sit on the street or sidewalk, yes. Minneapolis and St. Paul both require an obstruction permit. Your HVAC work may need its own mechanical permit too.
