Boom truck or crane?

A boom truck is a hydraulic crane mounted on a standard commercial truck, and it usually keeps a flatbed for hauling. A hydraulic truck crane rides on a carrier built just for the crane (Maxim Crane Works). Boom trucks are common for sign and utility work, HVAC units, material handling and roof deliveries.

Sizes vary. National Crane, a big boom truck maker, builds models from 10 to 33 tons with up to 167 feet of vertical reach, and larger swing-seat models from 30 to 60 tons with 161 to 206 feet.

Straight boom or knuckle boom

What a boom truck costs

How heavy is it?

LoadWeight
Rooftop unit, 3-ton (Carrier 48FC)482 lb
Rooftop unit, 25-ton (Carrier 48FC)2,174 lb
Hot tub, 7 seats, empty (Hot Spring Grandee)790 lb
Swim spa, empty (Bullfrog S200)2,720 lb
Roof truss, 40 ft (builder's estimate)270 to 350 lb
Steel beam W8x28, 10 ft280 lb
Pylon sign cabinet1,500 to 5,000 lb
Shipping container, 20', empty (Hapag-Lloyd)5,181 lb
Shipping container, 40', empty (Hapag-Lloyd)8,267 lb

The crane is sized by weight and reach together. A light load far from the truck can need a bigger crane than a heavy load close by. Your crane company works it out.

What the crane company will ask you

Have these answers ready and the quote comes back faster and closer to the final bill.

  1. What it is and what it weighs, plus anything it sits on. A spec sheet or a photo of the nameplate helps.
  2. Its size, and where it is now: on a truck, on the ground or on a roof.
  3. Where it has to go: how high, and how far from where the truck can park. That distance is the reach.
  4. Where the truck can park: street, driveway or lot, and whether the ground is firm and level for the outriggers.
  5. Anything overhead: power lines, trees, roof edges and signs.
  6. The date and time, and whether the lift has to be early or on a weekend.
  7. Who rigs the load and who signals, your crew or theirs.
  8. Street permit: if the truck has to sit in the street, who pulls it.

Questions

What is a boom truck?

A hydraulic crane mounted on a standard commercial truck, usually with a flatbed so it can haul the load too. Larger lifts use a truck crane, which rides on a carrier built just for the crane.

How much does it cost to rent a boom truck?

With an operator, published 2025 rates run $155 to $225 an hour for 23 to 40 ton boom trucks, with a 3 or 4 hour minimum. A short job usually costs about $465 to $900 plus travel time.

How much can a boom truck lift?

It depends on the model and the reach. National Crane boom trucks range from 10 to 60 tons of rated capacity, but a crane lifts far less at full reach than close in. Tell the crane company the weight and the distance.

Can I rent a boom truck without an operator?

Some companies rent bare, usually by the month. You supply a certified operator, fuel and insurance. Minnesota law requires a crane certificate to run a crane of 5 tons or more on a construction site.
